Recently uncovered information in Apple’s iPhone 2.x firmware reveals evidence of a next generation iPhone labeled “iPhone 2,1.” Whether this refers to Apple’s next iPhone release or an iPhone model to be released sometime in the future remains uncertain.
Originally discovered by MacRumors, the different model numbers (1,1 – 1,2 – 2,1) are set in place [...]

Recently uncovered information in Apple’s iPhone 2.x firmware reveals evidence of a next generation iPhone labeled “iPhone 2,1.” Whether this refers to Apple’s next iPhone release or an iPhone model to be released sometime in the future remains uncertain.

Originally discovered by MacRumors, the different model numbers (1,1 – 1,2 – 2,1) are set in place to differentiate the specific hardware models. So for example, the first generation iPhone was given the model number “iPhone 1,1,” and the iPhone 3G carries the designation of “iPhone 1,2.” What is interesting here is that both versions of the iPod touch have designated model numbers as well, yet the second generation carries the “iPod 2,1″ model number. The new internals and upgraded hardware introduced a speaker, volume controls, mic support and a beefed up processor.

While MacRumors notes that the model number has been revealed in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted firmware, they note that at least one developer has found evidence of a few dozen “iPhone 2,1″ models in action through PinchMedia’s ad serving reports. These reports show the first usage of the device in early October 2008 and picking up by mid-December 2008. They also report that these “iPhone 2,1″ devices are almost exclusively located in the San Francisco Bay Area (around where Apple is centralized) and utilize both common AT&T and WiFi connections.

<medium>PinchMedia’s Ad Serving Reports. The rest of the numbers have been blurred out.</medium>

While the iPhone 3G did add major new features namely 3G, GPS and more RAM, it did not make use of an entirely new new processor or chipset. Apple’s model number distinctions seem to follow the same structure. As with software, major revisions and upgrades require entire (dot) number jumps, say from 1.0 to 2.0, instead of 1.0 to 1.2 with say, a minor revision or enhancement.

So it would appear that a next generation iPhone will harbor primarily under-the-hood upgrades as rumors point to Multi-Core CPUs and possibly Multi-Core GPU support from Imagination Technologies. The number change would more than likely be indicative of a major renovation to the internal architecture of the device, not so much the exterior, which there has been no information about. This could include their own ARM processor cores, which Apple could use to further set themselves apart from the rest of the “smartphone” market.

Apple has hastily pulled a recent software update that was targeted at graphics issues stemming from the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter with the Mini DisplayPort-enabled MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro.

Just two days after its release, the NVIDIA Graphics Update 2009 has been removed from both Apple’s website and software update system for seemingly unclear reasons. In addition to providing improved cursor movement, the update was also set to boost HD video playback on the new MacBook Pro’s running NVIDIA’s GeForce 9600M graphics cards as well Mac systems that use GeForce 7300 GT chips.

Apple discussion forums have been littered with cases of notebook graphic issues. AppleInsider notes that user, munchnstuf, reported issues in a Mac Pro thread, saying, “My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I’ve only noticed it when I’ve switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don’t recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU.” Others are under the impression that their troubles are stemming from a software issue adding, “My external display (lacie electron) goes black 4/5 times in hour, for 5sec each time, (then) go back to normal state… under bootcamp its PERFECT!!! No issue with the external display!!”

There are several YouTube videos that demonstrate some of the problems that users are experiencing.

You can clearly see the external display issues, as this user states, “This video captures the corruption on a 24″ external monitor powered by a late 08 macbook pro 2.53 using a Mini DP to DVI extension. The corruption occurred after shutting down OS X and booting, not restarting the machine or waking from sleep.”

This video reveals strenuous screen flickering that this user experiences when their external display awakes. As Apple has a tendency to remain secretive about software updates, the reason for the update’s removal remains unclear.

It should be noted that this is not a major (dot) upgrade as “3.0″ will be. This update merely focuses on bug fixes and stability improvements for iPhone owners. While there are notably some features still missing from Apple’s iPhone OS, like MMS, copy-and-paste and push notifications, they should not be expected in this update.

<medium>iPhone 2.2.1 Software Update

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
• Improved general stability of Safari
• Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

Products compatible with this software update:
• iPhone
• iPhone 3G</medium>

Earlier this month, we reported about some news regarding future iPhone firmware 3.0 alongside the speculation of multi-core iPhones. While it’s still relatively unknown, some believe the next iPhone version may see a dramatic increase in performance.

Interestingly, we’ve heard some whispers about Bluetooth syncing coming in 2.3. It was rumored that some interface enhancements and certain little elements were added to 2.2.1, like deleting all emails at once, and some new email options for corporate users. We’re downloading the update now and will look for any new offerings.

AppleInsider reports that leaked evaluation notes from build 9G52 show 103 different bug fixes that will come with the release of the software expected in time for the holidays. Some of the fixes include graphics corruption issues, complications with DVI and Display detection, slow syncing, PDF printing from Mail, and a host of MobileMe syncing issues.

Apple has also been hard at work on Mac OS X 10.5.6 Server, set for release along its Client cousin, as seed notes from build 9G46 show testing efforts on Podcast Producer, Password Server, Server Manager, Single Sign-On, and AFP Performance.

Additional developer notes reveal the most current pre-release build of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, shown to be 10A222, which recently added a new Grand Central developer API. Microsoft Exchange support in Mail, Address Book and iCal remain the spotlight areas of testing. AI maintains that Snow Leopard’s 64-bit kernal support is to remain restricted to Macs released in the first half of 2008, including the early 2008 Mac Pro, early 2008 iMacs, and early 2008 MacBook Pro. As development of Snow Leopard progress, Apple will extend 64-bit kernal support to additional Macs.
