Apple’s legal hounds have sent Wired’s Gadget Lab and Brian Chen a cease-and-desist letter demanding they remove a detailed video explaining how to hack Mac OS X onto a netbook PC.

Chen has disclosed via Twitter that a past video tutorial on how to install Mac OS X onto a netbook, has gotten Wired into legal trouble as they are now being sued by Apple.

<medium>Gizmodo still has a copy of the video posted online.</medium>

The video tutorial in question gives an in depth play-by-play of how to install Mac OS X on a netbook, even discussing where to obtain copies of the software from a popular torrent site, The Pirate Bay, essentially being a Hackintosh for Dummies.

Gizmodo points out that it is more probable that Apple will be issuing Wired a cease-and-desist as opposed to actually bringing about financial sanctions. While the video explicitly breaks Apple’s EULA, Chen did offer this Disclaimer: “The following process potentially violates Apple’s End User License Agreement for Mac OS X. Please ensure you own a copy of Mac OS X Leopard if you wish to follow the procedure.” – if only he knew he needed more.

Update: Apparently we should disregard the following information as Brian Chen has released an additional tweet citing the whole situation to be one big misunderstanding. Apple is not suing Wired over the video tutorial.

What separates this hack from a few keyboard hacks in the past, is that this is a completely internal solution. It shows promising support for what may be a convergence of technologies used for general mobile computing.

<medium>“For the external approach, Ackermann modified a Robotech Bluetooth module, which he placed in an iPhone battery sleeve and connected to the iPhone (serial) connector port at the bottom of the unit. This allowed the the phone to communicate directly with the the module using the Bluetooth serial port profile,” Erica Sadun notes for Ars Technica.</medium>

The report goes onto explain that without Jay “saurik” Freeman’s Veency application, none of this would be possible. “Ackermann used a tiny libvncclient to generate keyboard events, which were then passed to Veency. Veency then provided the keyboard event injection using the iPhone’s private Graphics Services framework.”

Promising to say the least… Imagine an iPhone with a simple bluetooth keyboard connected to it, coupled with some recent tv-out discoveries and the device could turn into a truly mobile computer. If we do look at this device it will be sometime in the New Year and we’ll inform you guys if and when we commence this work.”

As you can see from an Apple discussion thread<ins datetime="2008-11-24T03:14:08+00:00"></ins><ins datetime="2008-11-24T03:14:08+00:00"></ins>, customers outside of Japan are pretty confused as to why Apple would leave the Emoji icons out of the update for everyone else. Emoji literally means “Picture Character” and in Japan, they are a staple of text messaging culture. Without the Emoji (emoticons), Apple’s iPhone would have not even been considered by a large group of potential customers.

The iPhone Dev Team is now reporting that the crew at RiPDev are nearing a release of Installer 4 (beta), and have subsequently decided to hold off on today’s release of PwnageTool 2.0.2.

The Dev Team tends not to announce release dates, in order to avoid being pressured into releasing something that is not ready (jeez, where have I seen that before?). Yet sensing people’s restlessness they did claim to have an official release “sometime today.” This release was noted to include the following features:

• As always PwnageTool 2.0.2 contains Cydia, in fact it contains a new version of Cydia with some bugfixes and other general goodness, thanks saurik!

• Installer 4 isn’t released by RiPDev as yet so PwnageTool 2.0.2 does not include installer.app – check out the RiPDev blog for the latest information.

• WinPwn uses compatible bundles (as provided by Planetbeing’s XPwn code), so we anticipate that WinPwn will be updated soon after our PwnageTool release, so Windows users shouldn’t have to wait too long! Please remember the DevTeam doesn’t provide end-user support for WinPwn!

The announcement of the nearly complete Installer 4 beta came just in the nick of time, as the Dev Team will be able to include it in the upcoming release, which is now set for tomorrow (Friday). While many are biting their nails in anticipation, it makes much more sense for them to hold off and release it in one fell swoop as opposed to providing two releases in two consecutive days.

Kudos, Dev Team, keep up the good work.

All iPhone App Store games have been hacked to get rid of the DRM locking them down. Some pretty tach savvy hackery is involved. But, if you’re ambitious, and hate DRM, this one’s right up your alley.

“Apple’s Fairplay DRM, which protects all the applications you download from iTunes, has been hacked. The method for hacking this has actually been around for a while, but has been recently applied to Super Monkey Ball and distributed into the wild. To do this, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone and SSH installed (to transfer the game and to fiddle with permissions). The theory is a bit techy and complex, but the execution isn’t too insane if you know your way around XCode and the command line,” Jason Chen reports for Gizmodo.

Additionally, Macnn reports that “If the hack does indeed work, the security breach could have a major impact on the hundreds of applications for sale at the AppStore. Super Monkey Ball sells for $10 and is protected with the same FairPlay DRM Apple has used for years on content from the iTunes store. The posting on Hacklabs provides step-by-step installation instructions for the game and encourages users to join a forum for sharing other hacked apps. Since the hack has only been available for a few hours, there has been no response yet from Apple or Sega or even confirmation of the hack.”

Additional thoughts: Did anyone really the think the App Store was immune to a good old game of cat-and-mouse?
