Engadget has reported information from a “reliable source that a version of the 3G iPhone’s firmware has been released — possibly for carrier partners currently field-testing the device — and has since been dissected.”

From the data received it would appear that we can come to some definitive conclusions about what to expect. “In particular, the escaped data points to the use of the Infineon S-GOLD3 baseband chip spotted in beta firmware, which connects the device both to UMTS-based 3G networks that operate primarily in Europe as well as the newer, faster HSDPA networks present in North America, Europe, and many other parts of the world.” via AppleInsider.

Additionally three Skyworks chips- the 77413, 77414, and 77427- direct communication to 3G specific frequencies, ranging from 850MHz used here in the States, to 1900MHz and 2100MHz used internationally.

While 3G has been widely accepted as being a no-brainer, perhaps more intriguing is the data pertaining to the Global Locate Library software that assists with GPS commands.

AppleInsider sites “The feature should allow the new iPhone to locate its position far more accurately than current solutions and is meant to interface with a Global Locate chip — since branded as a Broadcom product — built into a phone. Besides appearing to confirm the choice of Broadcom geo-tagging photos taken from the phone’s built-in camera.”

Lets hope that previous reports hinting to a lack of true GPS functionality have now become invalidated. Here is all the raw data via Engadget:

• Infineon PMB6952 / S-GOLD3 six-band UMTS / HSDPA transceiver (as we’d heard)
• Murata LMRX3JCA-479 tri-band amplifier (we’re assuming for the 3G)
• Sony SP9T antenna switch for GSM / UMTS dual mode
• ARM 1176JZF-S – Main CPU (same as in 1st gen iPhone)
• Skyworks 77427 chip – UMTS / HSDPA tx 1900MHz, rx 2100MHz
• Skyworks 77414 chip – UMTS / HSDPA 1900MHz
• Skyworks 77413 chip – UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz
•Internal build model number: n82ap (1st gen iPhone was model m68ap)
• UMTS Power Saving option – on or off
• Hooks for Global Locate Library (GLL), software that handles A-GPS related commands for the host processor

The memo was claimed to have cited “an exciting Summer Promotional Launch,” indicative of an iPhone launch. Engadget reveals implications that a possible release date of June 29th, the one year anniversary of the iPhone’s initial launch, may be in store.

Word around the Rumor Mill has been that the device will be slightly thicker than the current version, and sport an all black finish.

Our friends Engadget and 9to5Mac each report a source with valid information, and both of them are posting supposed leaked pictures of the new device.

Either way, WWDC (Apple’s annual World Wide Developer’s Conference) has been pegged as the perfect platform to release the much awaited Second Generation iPhone. Expect the Rumor Mill to heat up in the weeks leading up to this event.
