Two new builds of Mac OS X 10.5.6 have been released to Apple developers over the past couple of weeks, revealing a vast amount of bug fixes to Leopard as well as information on the much anticipated Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

AppleInsider reports that leaked evaluation notes from build 9G52 show 103 different bug fixes that will come with the release of the software expected in time for the holidays. Some of the fixes include graphics corruption issues, complications with DVI and Display detection, slow syncing, PDF printing from Mail, and a host of MobileMe syncing issues.

Apple has also been hard at work on Mac OS X 10.5.6 Server, set for release along its Client cousin, as seed notes from build 9G46 show testing efforts on Podcast Producer, Password Server, Server Manager, Single Sign-On, and AFP Performance.

Additional developer notes reveal the most current pre-release build of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, shown to be 10A222, which recently added a new Grand Central developer API. Microsoft Exchange support in Mail, Address Book and iCal remain the spotlight areas of testing. AI maintains that Snow Leopard’s 64-bit kernal support is to remain restricted to Macs released in the first half of 2008, including the early 2008 Mac Pro, early 2008 iMacs, and early 2008 MacBook Pro. As development of Snow Leopard progress, Apple will extend 64-bit kernal support to additional Macs.

Following a veritable upheaval of disbelief across the web surrounding Apple’s recommendation of utilizing various antivirus applications on Macs, that as it turned out had been present on Apple’s website for over a year’s time, has now apparently been pulled possibly due to the common lack of understanding.

The Apple support document in question had stated, “Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one program to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult,” adding the recommendation of applications such as Intego VirusBarrier X4, Norton Anti-Virus for Macintosh, and Virex.

Yet after heavy circulation of this off-putting news, scrutinizing eyes had determined that the last date of modification to the article was made on June 08, 2007. ArsTechnica notes that the confusion came through updates to each vendor’s latest application versions, adding that it would typically be unnecessary to use multiple antivirus apps simultaneously. So Apple was referring the fact that as long as users are running one of the recommended applications, it is more difficult for malware to infiltrate your machine. At any rate, Apple has decided to remove the article, for a possible rewrite to avoid confusing language, yet the original can still be found viewed here.

According to an unsatisfied customer who had recently spoken with Apple’s support team, the Cupertino-based company is planning the release of another software update to tackle external video glitches with the unibody MacBook.

AppleInsider reports that the user had been experiencing problems with the notebook being connected to an external display in which it would irregularly lose and regain signal. The user noted “After not finding anything the technician put me on hold to talk to the engineers and then updated me that it is now a known issue that will be addressed in a software patch sometime in the future.”

Similar issues have been plaguing the Apple discussion boards where users have attempted to use a new MacBook with external cinema displays to no avail. One user has noted that their external video feed fades in and out spasmodically. This user states, “Whenever I launch either quicktime or iTunes, my external display cuts out and then comes back intermittently. Seems like there’s some issue with quicktime (come code from which I presume is included in quicktime) that’s causing this effect.”

Yet another issue that has come into focus is where iTunes movies are failing to show up on external displays that are connected via a Mini DisplayPort to VGA. Rightfully frustrated by the this, the user states, “Just got a new MacBook last week and finally found a mini Display Port -> VGA adapter so i could use my 19″ external display. I rented a movie from the iTunes store yesterday and when I tried to play it on my external display, it gave me a warning/error that the display was ‘not an authorized HDCP display’ and it would not play. Plays fine on the small MacBook screen, just nothing external. To make it even worse, i tried all the movies that I have purchased from the iTunes store with the same result… NONE of them will play on anything but the MacBook’s small 13″ screen. This is crazy unacceptable.”

If one were to do just a bit more digging in the Apple discussion boards, a whole host of similar issues would come to light. With such an outcry, it would only make sense that Apple would be working hard on a software update to alleviate these issues.

MacBlogz has found another iPhone Bug; When you scroll through the homescreens on your iPhone, if you attempt to move an icon you can freeze the devices screen in the middle of two screens, as well as leave icons half way of the screen.

There has definitely been an avalanche of iPhone bugs pouring in since July 11th, and most of them are pretty hard to ignore. Certain usability has been seriously affected by many of the bugs we’ve seen and reported about. This home-screen bug in the video below may not affect usability levels like some of the other bugs that have been found, but this one is surely unintentional, and needs to be fixed nonetheless.

Last year, there was a bug similar to this one, where you could scroll through your home-screens and tap the screen to get stuck in between two screens. However this one seems a bit more buggy, so we like it more. Either way, we know there are several major issues with iPhone 2.0. When Apple addresses some of these core issues, the fixes are surely going to trickle down and stabilize the usability of the device… We hope.

In July’s MX Logic Threat Forecast and Report, which provides IT leaders and messaging security professionals with information on recent and potential email and Web threats, they recognize the iPhone as a significant target for increased spam, scams and malware campaigns surrounding the highly anticipated July 11th release. They claim that scams will be especially prevalent if supply for the iPhone fails in meeting demand.

MX Logic cites rivals Websense Security Labs’ June alert that warned users of a malicious email spam campaign targeting Latin America. The spam used a social-engineering tactic that focused on the hype around the upcoming iPhone 3G launch. Clicking on the email’s link for a quick “presentation” or for “more information” triggers the download of a Trojan named “presentacion.mov.exe”. (Thankfully, all Websense Messaging and Websense Web Security customers were protected against this attack (?). Phew.)

Therefore, as a service to you, we are passing on this alert in the hopes that by doing so, we help save a few lives…we mean iPhones…in the process. Beware where you click, as the iPhone may attack.

MX Logic expects significant spam, scams and malware campaigns surrounding the highly anticipated July 11th release of Apple’s new iPhone. Scams will be especially prevalent if supply doesn’t meet demand. There has already been an iPhone scam with a malware component targeted towards Latin America: http://securitylabs.websense.com/content/Alerts/3107.aspx.

Additional thoughts: Only a matter of time. Apple’s iPhone 3G is going to be a global phenomenon, not just sell well here in the United States. Apple’s going to have to do some serious security to avoid hackers inevitably porting viruses over to the iPhone. In the world of hacking, spamming, viruses and bugs, being able to say you were the first to globally disrupt/hack the iPhone would be equivalent to celebrity status.
