Hey, here's an idea.... instead of trying to figure out how to get more money out of it's customers, how about if ATT just did the right thing and upgraded their network to handle all the traffic they have now?

Well the cell networks have limited bandwidth ... pushing desktop-like data traffic through the cell network can be very costly. I can understand why a carrier would want to separate tethering from regular mobile use. Just look what happened after the iPhone was released and people actually started to really use the cell data network... had a lot of problems.

To call it the "exact same data" is being slightly short-sighted... take a look at your monthly data transfer rates for your mobile device versus your laptop or desktop... probably a 1:100 ratio if not more.

What I'd like to see is a variable voice plan for iPhones ... I rarely use my voice minutes anymore. In fact I have so many "rollover" minutes it's ridiculous. And they expire after a certain amount of time! I want to be able to exchange those rollover minutes for data bandwidth.

What exactly is meant by "working on"? There is no actual 'work' to be done, other than:

1) deciding on a price for this plan
2) making Apple implement some DRM system to make it non trivial for end-users to do tethering while enabling people with this plan to do it
3) start selling the plan

This is just a stupid money grab, to make people pay twice, once to get the data over the air to their device (AT&T's network to the device the person owns), then pay again to transfer that exact same data between two devices the end user owns outright, not involving AT&T or their network at all).
