TechCrunch brings the latest word of an Apple touch tablet device rumored to be released around the fall of 2009. Even though rumors of an Apple tablet, or multi-touch netbook have been around for a long time, TechCrunch explains that their sources have actually seen the rumored device.
TechCrunch explains that they’ve received the same or similar information from three independent sources close to apple. “…expect a large screen iPod touch device to be released in the Fall of ‘09, with a 7 or 9 inch screen. Prototypes have been seen and handled by one of our sources, and Apple is talking to OEMs in Asia now about mass production.”
Additionally, the information notes that Apple has been experimenting internally with large multi-touch, tablet-like devices for quite a few years, however concerns over usability and acceptance have been holding it back. According to TC’s Michael Arrington, what makes this device different is the App Store. Users will now instantly have access to millions of games and applications for the device. There is no information regarding pricing.
Back in October of this year, John Markoff for The New York Times also shared some information he thought was credible in regards to an Apple tablet rumor. All in all, a device like this is expected, and would be a natural move in Apple’s future product lineup. As multi-touch technology matures, expect it to spread across multiple products, not just small handhelds and iPods.

The larger iPod Touch must still be pocketable. The “concept” is a Mac that we have with us all the time, everywhere we go. I simply won’t buy another mobile Mac that I have to lug in a case. And imagine what an anywhere, anytime Mac can feature as services!
Nor should anyone have to buy more than one Mac. So the “MacTROU” (for The Rest of Us) must be untethered, like the Kindle, using EVDO. And better than the Kindle, this gizmo connects to all your files on MobileMe.
Apple can charge whatever it needs to for the mobile Mac, for the connectivity, and for a subscription to MobileMe.

Steve, if the rumored device has a 7 to 9″ screen than it won’t be very pocketable. But I see your point in making sure its not another device with a case and a power extension and all those unwanted accessories, and I agree.
One thing I keep thinking about is the OS. If it’s an embedded version of Leopard that’s one thing. But if it’s the iPhone OS than a lot will need to be refined and changed before I make that purchase. I just feel that touch technology needs to mature a considerable amount before it becomes the “go-to” OS for people during productivity spats.

I just bought the 2nd generation iPod touch, and if apple makes this new touch will my iPod now be outdated?

All digital products will be outdated, because there always is a new one.
