Sources Say 4GB iPhone Is Not Happening, Just A Rumor

Boy Genius Report has been reporting about Walmart carrying the iPhone for some time now. Most of what they’ve reported in the past has correlated with information we’ve heard from our sources, however recent claims of a 4GB iPhone are simply not true.

stock1Aside from BGR, we’ve also heard that Walmart will begin selling the iPhone in the near future. However, they broke the news first and we only found out/confirmed it due to an investigation based on BGR’s initial tip, so nothing original was offered from our sources.

BGR has been reporting that Walmart will begin selling the iPhone since early October. An initial expected delivery date of November 15th came and went, but rumors held strong. As the end of the year nears, BGR is claiming to have heard of an upcoming $99, 4GB iPhone to be released within the next 3 weeks, and sold directly through Walmart, and possibly Sam’s Club.

Based on every piece of information we’ve heard, and direct information inside AT&T, this is not happening. Our AT&T sources have been confirmed accurate in the past, so this new information is being reported with confidence. If this rumor does come true, then we will be just as surprised as everyone else. However, we are sticking with our colleagues on this one and endorsing the inaccuracy of these rumors.

For the sake of fairness, BGR does explain that the information is not from one of their regular, trusted sources.

I never bought the 4GB iPhone rumors for a second. They belong in the same pile as the RED iPhone rumors.

Since last week I though these 4GB rumors were rubbish. Apple specifically discontinued them. Specifically.

If this comes true, then Apple will have everyone extremely confused. Who wants a 4GB iPhone these days? Who?

Well it would make sense… duh! To control the market! Think about what Apple has been preaching. They are trying to knock off Nokia at the #1 spot. Nokia’s control of the mobile market has dropped drastically this past year due to the iPhone selling worldwide. Now if Apple introduced the 4GB at a super discounted price then everyone would be lining up! Especially during the holiday season. Don’t tell me you don’t think it would sell! Think about the younger kids, teens, or people who didn’t want to shell out more than $100 for a phone. Now they have an excuse to spend $100 on a phone. Just not any phone though, an iPhone! And the thing is Apple can afford to do this and would still bank money. It costs Apple $173 to make the iPhone 3G 8GB, definitely less for a 4GB model. Then Apple sells it to AT&T for $299 (4GB). AT&T subsidizes the phone if you sign a 2 year contract and sells it for $99. Look Apple still makes $126 (MSRP – Build Cost = Profit). Then think about the App Store and it’s popularity. Sources say the APP Store has the potential of a $1 Billion Market Place. Remember Apple keeps 30% of purchases made over the App Store and they are not doing anything other than approving the Apps and hosting them. You do the math. Selling more iPhones means control of the market which means more money for Apple and because everyone can afford an iPhone they’re gonna be exposed to the App Store and be tempted to buy stuff (Don’t forget iTunes, Music, Movies & TV Shows) which means even more money for Apple. It’s all Business 101. I’m not saying Apple is going to sell the iPhone for $99 but it would make sense for them to do so… only if they want to take over the world… LoL…

I don’t know… given NAND pricing trends, it would seem a $99 8GB version would be more plausible than resurrection of the 4GB model. Perhaps after Apple bumps the bottom end up from 8 to 16 GB (Macworld?).

I’m with you Ryan, I just don’t see a 4GB iPhone coming back. I mean, if it does, I’ll be the first to admit I am surprised, but, I just don’t see them backtracking. It makes ZERO sense to me.

“rumor of iPhone headed to walmart for $99…I don’t think so”
That’s what I posted on my little blog and I’m happy to see others calling BGR out on this! I mean if anything the $99 iPhone would be an 8GB pushed down $100 because of a new 32GB iPhone. Not 100% of BGR was saying it would be $99 phone exclusive to walmart, but I just don’t see apple doing exclusive. Tt would be available at best buy, att, apple stores, not just walmart!. Also, if any store was getting an exclusive I doubt it would be walmart.

I’ve been saying this rumor wouldn’t happen on my little blog, glad to see some bigger names calling BGR out on this one. Couple things don’t add up for me… 1) 4GB iPhone: this will not happen. Maybe a 32GB comes out and moves the 8GB down to $99, but 4GB is just moving backwards and not very apple like 2) Giving a store an exclusive? I’m not 100% if that’s what BGR was saying, but that’s how it sounds. If walmart got a $99 iPhone then att, best buy, and yes, the apple store itself would also sell them at the same price.

@ Chris and DMS: BGR’s sources have always been correct and the reports have indeed been confirmed that Walmart will be selling the iPhone. This is confirmed. It’s the $99 4GB iPhone part that we have not been able to confirm, and have thus heard that it is inaccurate. As it stands, if we see a 4GB $99 iPhone, we’ll be as surprised as anyone else.
