iLounge points out that Apple’s new premium, in-ear headphones will not be as compatible with the iPhone and iPhone 3G as we all thought.
According to a support document found on Apple.com, the new in-ear headphones will not support the volume controls for iPhone and iPhone 3G models.
“[the support document] explains that while the remote, microphone, and volume control features of the new headphones are compatible with the 120GB iPod classic, iPod nano 4G, and iPod touch 2G, the volume controls will not work with iPhone or iPhone 3G — only the playback remote and microphone. In addition, the article states that earlier iPod models will be compatible with audio only.”
After some long delays, Apple’s headphones have finally received a shipping date of 7-10 days. They can be found at Apple’s online store here.

Obviously a hardware limitation of the iPhone headphone port. It certainly seems odd to not support the most important device in the lineup.
I guess that will be one of the updates we’ll see on the v3 iPhone this summer.

I seriously hope I’m not the only one angered by this. I have been waiting for these for a few presents to people, as well as myself. This is really sad. That software update Ryan’s talking about better come SOON.

Redmond, the first poster – Ryan – suggested it’s a hardware limitation that will be “fixed” when new iPhones are released, not by a software update. So those with iPhone 2G and 3Gs, no need to relax.

just reach into your gd pocket and hit the volume button.
unlike play/pause/fwd/prev (which will work) the volume can be adjusted on the iPhone w/o looking at it.
then, go cry some more.

Unless the internal circuitry is different (the headphone jack does have the same number of conductors) this should be able to fixed via a software update.

@ Design / exactly what thought.
If apple sent out an update for the newer iPods , did they already make the iPods built to work with the new headphones when they were in theworks ?
The iPhone original headphones also has the three rings as the new headphones with volume control.
I lost my original this week and I got the ones with volume because they were the same price as the ones without.
Hopefully in 3.0 there will be support.

I just can’t fathom why in the world Apple’s Flagship product (iPhone 3G) would be orphaned from their Top End in ear Headphones?! I wish they would go on record and explain why instead of making us all take guesses..

Hate to pass on the bad news but it doesn’t work with iPhone 3G OS 3.0. I have just done a complete reinstall and upgrade to 3.0 to ensure that I have no ghosts in the machine. BUT still the volume doesn’t work.
I would agree with the comments above that this problem should be sorted by a software patch. However, not this time…

They do work with the 3GS but not 3G this is total bull from apple they really need to sort this out

Yeh just confirming they do work with 3GS and current firmware- and i’m positive they didn’t work when I first got the 3GS

i can confirm they are not working with the 3G. the middle button works,i don’t know if the mic works. great job apple!

This another example of Apple’s omnipotence. If it were any other company they would addresses customers concerns there isn’t even anyone you can complain to. It would be nice if it said something about compatibility on the package before you shell out $79 bucks for these over prices headphones. Or, maybe the sales person could mention something while you’re buying this product…boy, what a novel idea! customer service! Excuse me while I check “MYSELF” out at my local HomeDepot!

arghs ! this is ridiculous !! volume button doesn’t work, then what’s the point? yeahs i get it– so u can reach in to change the volume. but the whole point of it being on the earphone is because of convienance?
this is so lousy on apple’s behalf. am i surprised? no i am not.

apple is very very dissapointing. apple’s lousy design. In fact, if your iphones werent jailbroken, it will just be a lousy phone with hi-tech touchscreen!

after the update allow them to try it for themselves.
