iPhone 2.2.1 to Support Push Notification?

MacRumors has noted that Russian website, RussianiPhone.ru, alleges to have caught sight of the not yet released iPhone 2.2.1 Beta 1 which they claim will implement Push notifications and MobileMe syncing with Notes support.

While developers and users alike have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Push notification support that Apple had originally assured would be a go by September, the process had been plagued with delays in attempts to “get it 100% right the first time.”

If RussianiPhone.ru does indeed hold a copy of iPhone 2.2.1 Beta 1, then they were able to obtain it outside of normal public distribution, due to the fact that Apple has yet to seed it to developers. In an attempt to prove the validity of their claims, the site has put up a screenshot of the Notes and Calendar applications that show the iconic red update badges. This does not however provide concrete evidence as this would not be difficult to create in photo manipulation software such as Photoshop.

With the current iPhone firmware, applications cannot run background tasks, making it impossible for an Instant Messaging application to notify users of the arrival of new messages. With Push notifications, such applications would have the ability to send these alerts. I think that I would not be alone in saying, let’s hope that there is some legitimacy to these claims so that we can see Push notifications in the near future.

FINALLY !!! PLEASE BE TRUE !!!

Messaging apps could really benefit from this. I ams constantly chatting with people then I put the phone down and I would LOVE to get a little vibration or bell notification when I get a new message.

I’m calling bullshit on this. I doubt Apple would be privately seeding the push functionality at this point.

@stevie: I’m calling bullshit on this Russian site having access to the push functionality. The badges on the calendar and notes applications look a little fake to me. (just saying)

BS on the source.

But this functionality *should* be coming soon (as it already late), so this is not exactly going out on a limb.

I don’t believe Apple has the system functioning how they want before release. Anecdotal evidence for sure, but my experience with the way notifactions are pushed to the iPhone for App Updates has been inconsistent at best. Almost certainly this is the system Apple is using for those updates as a test bed.
