Back in May we reported about a rumor floating around that Google was bringing themes to Gmail. As it turns out, that rumor gained traction today as some Gmail users saw a “themes” tab pop under settings.

In May the expected date for the Gmail themes to be unveiled was June 5th. As with most Google products, themes have been in testing and have lately been popping up for lucky Gmail users. So while the initial date was incorrect, the feature has most likely been in development and selectively released to batches of users.

Some of the themes include New Blue, Cold Shower, Cherry Blossom, Night Shade, Beach and Bus Stop. Still no word on being able to upload your own CSS file à la Mailplane, but that might be in the works as well.

Delicious if I may say so myself.

They are tasty, indeed. I just set one up on my Gmail account. I sure hope they roll these out for Google Apps users soon. After all, we took the time to move our domains’ e-mail to their servers and to view their ad content. We want the goodies, too! I have a Gmail account, but all it does is forward to my domain mail now.

I have to say, the new themes are definitely a big improvement over the old style. I’m currently using the “Shiny” theme, which is very sleek, clean and professional, yet keep you drooling.

Google’s been known to roll things out to “batches” of users, and then cycle those around until they know compatibility issues are minimal. You may see them later, or in the near future.
