An anonymous tip reveals information of a 32GB iPhone making a debut at MacWorld 2009. The new information correlates with on-going speculation that Apple will diversify and expand its iPhone family line-up, even though 4th Quarter production rates have been decreased.
A while back Apple Insider first reported about 8GB iPhone supplies running low, which was then believed to be pointing at a possible upgrade, or boost in storage. Following the first report of decreased supplies, the news and follow up supply checks were topsy-turvy at best. Although speculation has most likely been accurate, the natural evolution for Apple’s iPhone would be a doubling in storage. The 8GB iPhone will be discontinued, and Apple will offer 16GB and 32GB models, alongside some new less expensive model(s), aimed at diversifying its iPhone line-up.
Previous reports of Apple hoarding nearly 50 million Samsung NAND chips align with this new information. The flash memory market is still pretty shaky, so Apple’s “long-term-strategy” could very well have already been decided. The tipster claims to work with a third party iPhone accessory supplier, and to be in the know when it comes to the iPhone’s short-term roadmap. I have never received a tip from them before, and although I would take this information with a grain of salt, it could very be well be dead on.
“That rumored red iPhone… It’s not happening. The only iPhone news I know for certain is that it’s getting bumped to 32GB in January.”
Related speculation has has led many to believe that Apple will sell a $99 iPhone next year, while others believe that Apple will introduce more iPhone models broadening the product line. Rumors of a (PRODUCT) RED iPhone have been circulating for over a year, as well as the much rumored iPhone nano.
In order to sell a less-expensive iPhone, priced (let’s say) at $99, Apple would need to introduce a new model with less storage. The current models would get bumped in specs, and a cheaper iPhone would be introduced and outfitted with less storage than its bigger brothers. The current 8GB iPhone would have absolutely no place in this line up, and will probably be discontinued. At the same time, for Apple to increase or double the iPhone’s storage, they would need to either raise the price, or increase the iPod touch’s storage capacity as well, in order to avoid significant cannibalization, or confusion among consumers.
Theoretically, the iPhone family would have a diverse selection of products, just like the current iPod line-up. Perhaps not as many models or choices in color, but the storage capacity and features will be spread across the products, lowest to highest, priced accordingly. In what initially might seem to conflict, Friedman Billings Ramsey analyst Craig Berger has reported today that “Apple has cut its calendar Q4 iPhone production plans significantly more than originally estimated.” Chances are Apple is cutting production (on current iPhone models) to level out with industry demand. Although extremely difficult, the company must have the ability to foresee downturns in the industry, and mobile market.
Seeing as how Apple has already smashed their goal of selling 10 Million iPhones, and the device has become their biggest sector of business, increased diversification across the line makes complete sense. Cutting production on current iPhone models should in no way affect Apple’s plans for expansion with the iPhone.

Wait. So why wouldn’t the Red iPhone come true? The response to that rumors is great, people will buy those!

First of all, the RED in the image, is NOT what the PRODUCT RED iPhone would look like. If it were to happen, it would be much darker and more metallic.
See here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/red/

If its a 3G iPhone, it will not be metallic. The metal blocks the 3G and the GPS signals. That is why they went with plastic for the back of the 3G iPhones.

OK, I think that a RED iphone is needed but… I thing they should make a spechel RED iphone with 32GB and it should cost $400! THAT is what they should do!
Reply
I think it’d be cool if the higher end iPhones went back to aluminum. Sleeker & sexier. maybe the red could be like an anodized aluminum or something, like on the ipod

well really they need the blue cuz then gangstas can get all pissed of at this did anyone think of that???

couldn’t you see them introducing a cheaper iphone, perhaps with less memory, without taking away features to make it mor affordable. i think it would be unintelligent to “take away” features at this point from the device. if anything, they should ADD features to the more expensive version… assuming this speculation is correct

I bet you it’s announced in a “by the way” sentance

any one got any clues about this coz i want one but i am willing to wait till jam 2009 for a 32gb iphone

This is an arbitrary number I suppose, but to me 32gb is a storage size that makes me really think about buying one. I’m a music fiend and have way more than that, but 32 is a number where you can really have a big chunk of your music and some movies and not feel like you’re naked media-wise, and not make you wish that you had a separate ipod. This may be enough for me to ditch Sprint/Blackberry Pearl.
I really do wish they would release a CDMA version though. GSM just isn’t as good in America (even though it’s the standard in most parts of the world).
Even an unlocked iphone really only gives you the option of t-mobile, which is cheaper for service but probably the worst in terms of data rates, coverage etc.
What an amazing time we live in.

I feel the point Aviv made regarding cannibalization of the iPod Touch should Apple release a 32GB iPhone is valid. Due to that fact, I also feel this rumor should be discredited. Unless of course there’s rumors of a 64GB iPod Touch to be released at Macworld too?

I Also think the apple should make a Sprint iPhone!

obviously apple can’t make everyone happy but they definitely should come out with a 32gb iphone 3g. I think it will definitely up their sells a bit. The only problem I foresee is that their ipod sales would go down. who needs a ipod and iphone when you can have 1 in all device.
Reply
who cares if their ipod sales go down, their iphone sales would go up that much and more. Everybody hanging around on the sprint, verizon, alltel t-mobile and other networks want ipods too, thus there is still a very large market for ipods. If they are on these other networks and make this same connection of, why have 2 when I can have 1, then those consumers in the market for an ipod become in the market for an iphone. What Apple should really do is change their contract with AT & T to either get more money for their iphone sales or release their iphone to other networks.

if they release a 32gb iphone, there will be a 64gb touchpod. undoubtedly. i really hope they will introduce it on macworld

i think the (red) iphone is a great idea. (red) products are very popular. along with that i think apple should come out with iphones in all different colors just like the ipod nanos. the colors make them pop and add to the quality of the phone. it also allows people to make their phone personal and it will make more people want to buy them because the different colors will make them even more unique compared to other phones that are out right now.

Any iPhones coming out shouldn’t be in metal… they should all me made in this material cause it never scratches and always looks new (black part, soft plastic): http://www.outlookseries.com/news/Services/2136.h13.jpg

How about we let apple have the element of surprise, and give them the benefit of making they’re own choises and design whatever they seem to like. After all thats what they’ved been doing so far, and it’s turned out allrigt. As long as it has an apple logo on the back, i’m satisfied…

I don’t consider it’s worth buying the new iPhone 3G S, unless your carrier offers you a cheap upgrade option. The OS 3.0 will bring a lot of 3G S’ features, excepting the 7.2MBps HSPA, 3 MP camera, better processor, and a few more. If you don’t really need those features, go for the OS 3.0 and keep your current iPhone 3G.
However, fans of the iPhone are cheered when Apple’s iPhone 3G S made its debut. Also, most users would like to put DVDs movie video on iPhone 3G S. I’ve found a good tutorial about import DVD / video to iphone 3GS/ iPhone 3G:
