NVIDIA GPU Failures, Some Macbook Pros Affected

This past July, Nvidia’s notebook graphics cards- the ones with the G84 or G86 chip set- failed at “higher than-normal” rates. Apple is owning up to the malfunction and is offering to fix any Nvidia graphics card problem for free within two years of the original purchase date.

Macbook Pro Current MacBook Pros have the GeForce 8600M GT, utilizing the Nvidia G84. Earlier this summer, Nvidia assured Apple that the MacBook Pros were completely safe. Boy did Nvidia pull the wool over Apple’s eyes…Or so they thought! After undergoing their own investigation, Apple has now “determined that some MacBook Pro computers….may be affected.” This doesn’t bode well for NVIDIA’s credibility either. Recent rumors and information have led many to believe that Apple will be turning to NVIDIA in the upcoming release of its notebook line, in order to get rid of the negative gaming stigma their laptops have been plagued with.

Recent rumors have been circulating about the preferred chipsets to be used in the upcoming MacBook redesigns. While some have been under the impression that PA Semi may be developing custom chips for the imminent refresh, Mac Soda believes that Apple may opt to use NVIDIA chipsets instead of the Intel chipsets used in all of the previous MacBook models.

If you have paid in the past to get this problem fixed, Apple will issue you a refund. If you own a MacBook Pro that was manufactured between May 2007 and September 2007 and have poor quality (scrambled) video, or worse yet, no video at all….It is safe to say you’re taking a trip to the local Apple store for a little TLC.
