Apple Grabs 20% of US Notebook Market Share in July and August

A report from the marketing research and industry tracking NPD Group, states that Apple notebooks made up (accounted for) 20% of retail notebook sales in the United States during the months of July and August, 2008.

market shareThe report covers the number of boxes Apple actually shipped. Or how many actual physical computers were tracked to have shipped/sold. However, if you take Apple’s garnered revenue during those months into account, Apple’s market share climbs to 35% instead of 20%.

In a time of critical economic crisis, the Cupertino tech giant has been able to keep interest in its products, and generally in its brand pretty successfully. “Windows laptop sales were down 1.5 per cent by value and ten per cent by volume year on year, while Mac notebook sales grew 30 per cent by revenue and 35 per cent by units, according to NPD.”

On October 21st, Apple will be releasing 4th quarter earnings results, and we’ll actually be able to hear and digest how the company has been affected by the economic downturn. A report such as this by NPD should reassure share holders and investors that Apple is more than capable to weather these turbulent times. With a new overhauled mac notebook line expected in the next few weeks, interest in the companies new products is again on the rise. By introducing extremely competitive products at highly aggressive price-points, Apple will be better positioned than all of its competitors for the holiday shopping season.
