It’s more so used as a core/foundation for their ecosystem (Syncing, media, music, etc.) — Additionally, Apple devotes massive resources, time, money and effort into developing, maintaining and increasing the functionality iTunes has. It’s a shame other big companies/studios/media houses are exploiting Apple for mere pennies. It’s a known fact that Apple doesn’t make that much money on iTunes.
