My dad works in mechanical contracting and makes over $140k a year. No college degree. There's thousands of things you can do, that don't require college, to make lots of money. Don't be ignorant.

$17.00/hr was most likely offered due to lack of ability. The offer I received was much higher than that. I negotiated for more and after a day or so they called back with a higher offer. I took it. I don't recall being sent a letter that looked anything like that..... my guess is there was no job offer.... only a rejection and a made up offer letter.
To many mentions of ... "I wasn't going to take the job any way"! (uh-huh, sure).

Major cities have a much higher cost of living than smaller cities/towns. Other factors such as married/single, children, vehicles, etc...come into play also. Being single, with no car payment (paid off), etc...I could live on $12/hour in the town I went to college in...albeit with not much left over. Where I live now, I'd have to make $24/hour just to have the same standard of living. If I had the choice, I'd take $12/hour and live in a smaller town than $24/hour and have to live in a major city.

Its not the person, its the job. It doesn't matter what you "could" make in another job, $17/hour is good [compared to what other retailers pay] for THAT job.

By the way, what you could make [per hour/year] isn't always what you do end up making. Factors such as hours, schedule, location, etc...come into play also. I would accept less per hour [and have in the past] to work in a smaller town [with a lower cost of living] and/or be guaranteed more hours (full-time vs. part-time), to not have to work odd-hours/weekends, etc...

Air Mouse Pro Controlling Pro Tools

Make a videoI got an email to go to an initial group meeting / interview. My story is sort of funny. I have money in the bank and have been a recording engineer my whole life now 49 making 30 to 50 an hour. I am tired of the gigs no gigs life, commute to the city etc and thought I could work as an apple teacher / specialists part time as a way to earn some extra cash and keep my projects going at my home studio. Mostly I just went because I got the invite and wanted to check out the process, pay, benefits, stock options which they give full time employees etc. It was for the new store opening at the Greenwich Conn. I went and it was almost like acting class. You go into a room with about 20 other apple employee hopefuls and they play you some videos to get you pumped and tell you Apple is a great place to work. Then ask you to get to know the people sitting close to you. Then they ask everyone to stand up, introduce yourself and why you think you are a good fit for Apple and one by one they have you say a few things that you learned about those people sitting next to you. My two guys to share with were not chatty so that made it a little tough when it was my turn. Then one of my two guys announced me as very smart and that I am an engineer " now the Apple hiring staff think I am an egotistic spy :). Yikes!
Then they had us go in front of the crowd, after giving us a script with a question having each of us pretend we are a customer in the store and the other guy from your group pretends he is an apple employee at the store and he answers your scripted question best he can. There were store managers, the regional corporate retail head from Apple and about 5 other apple "judges". I started feeling like I was on the new tv hit Apple Idol.
Then you answer the next guys question as an employee. My question to ask the pretend apple employee was can Microsoft office run on a Mac. It said on the sheet with the question that I was to be aggressive and really believe that I new what I was talking about and that a friend of mine told me it could not run on a mac. So I beat up my poor little apple employee by being stern with my question who was the most timid guy in the room and he shook and cowered at first but then got the answer "yes it can" after trembling with voice cracking under the pressure. The audience cheered!! I followed my instructions in how I was to ask the question but I don't think the judges liked my aggressiveness. Then it was my turn to be the store employee and answer a question which escapes me but I got it right, it was not a hard one and tried to be a cheery apple employee while doing so. After each one of these episodes everyone in the room would clap. One guy had to pretend he was an old woman and if I were a judge I would have given him a 10. He was funny and upbeat. They want you to be perky, upbeat and love Apple. I guess I showed my personality on a bad day to all the judges but hey it was acting class, I just did what I was told from the script....
You also haft to fill out a sheet with about ten technical Mac questions that they say you will not be judged on but gives them an idea of your technical knowledge. I believe they think most folks can't answer most of them because they give you almost no space or time to answer some relatively tough questions about networking, syncing itunes etc. I have the hand writing skills of a 5 year old, but I am sure if anyone could read what I wrote I got 9 of the ten if not all ten answers right.
So long story short I got an email a week later saying we are sorry but.....
No explanation of why just the usual form letter. I have worked with macs since the IIfx came out. That was around 92 I'm guessing. I have owned about 10 different macs myself and have installed pro tools hd systems and trouble shoot them for many recording studios. I was using OS X when it was a beta test, I have used all the ilife apps since they came out, I have and use Final Cut Pro on my Mac Pro, Pro Tools, Adobe creative suite,
I owned the first ipod, have an iphone, you get the picture...
Overqualified, don't think that matters. Lesson learned. Be upbeat, even if your not, practice your public speaking and look eager and be a true Apple believer. I love Apple, I love macs even when I want to through them out the window at times and they have helped me make a living after tape machines left the recording studios. Did I really want to work at the mall. hmmm. I can work for three hours and make the same money as eight hours in the store.
But meeting lots of new people, helping them with their macs sounded fun. I might go to my local store and try again.
I help all my friends with their mac questions all the time so why not get paid for it....
And lastly it did hurt my feelings a little that I was rejected for a job at the mall.
Hope this gives some folks an idea of what an the initial Apple group interview is like.

Minimum wage was $5.15/Hour about 9 years ago when I was in college. I believe its now $6.25/Hour (slightly higher in some states). Minimum wage is not sufficient to live on. But, alot of those working for minimum wage are college students and teenagers who are working for some extra spending money.

As for $17.00...That is a great wage for a retail position. Even with a college degree I only made $12.50-24.00/Hour depending on the location, job requirements, etc...$17/hour = $2,944/month (before taxes). How far that goes depends on where you live. Where I live right now, an apartment would cost a minimum of $1,000/month + utilities. But, in the town where I went to college (I lived there up until 2 years ago) my Rent + Utilities ran ~$600/month. I could easily have lived [by myself] on $17/hour living there. Get a roommate or two and you can afford to live just about anywhere (except maybe California or NYC) on $17/hour.

if you need a job and Apple offers you one, take it! At least you got a job. You can always keep looking for a different job while working. As for those folks out there making $50k+, be thankful, just because you are making alot of cash does not give you the right to talk down to anyone making $17 p/hour or less.

I have been in the Automobile Industry for 17 years (directly out of High School, no degree). I make well into the 70's each and every year.

Do a little research my friend. Look at what a good auto salesperson can make....
