French mobile carrier, Orange, has admitted to capping 3G networks and will reportedly raise download speeds after extensive outcry from frustrated iPhone users.
Orange has since been feeling the pressure from enraged customers who had tested and compared download speeds on iPhon.fr’s forums. Users had found that iPhones on Germany’s T-Mobile network, which had subsequently been acknowledged as the ‘best performing’ 3G network around, were able to hit download speeds of 1800Kbps while Orange customers couldn’t squeak out anything above 400Kbps.
After flooding Orange’s tech support lines, a few technicians willingly revised subscriber’s Access Point Name (APN) as well as a few other parameter changes. This resulted in drastically increased download speeds, in rare cases hitting an excess of 3Mbps.
Shortly after getting wind of this information, users threw out the notion that download speeds were hindered by faulty hardware and began pointing the finger solely at Orange. Frustrated with this, users had noted that an artificial cap of network service came in direct violation of agreements between the carrier and user that cited theoretical download speed of up to 7.2Mbps. Irate Orange subscribers have also began a petition that can be seen here.
