Despite Apple’s recent accolades from the American Customer Satisfaction survey released this week, Apple is still struggling to hedge consumer complaints regarding the recent induction of the iPhone 3G and MobileMe to their ongoing arsenal.
Apple released a software update this week that “partially fixes” the connection issues that have caused a global uproar for those utilizing the modern 3G network for their iPhones. Jennifer Bowcock, a spokeswomen for Apple said, “The software update improves communication with 3G networks.”
In the days since the release of the newest iPhone, customers around the world have experienced a slew of dropped calls as well as Internet (and speed) issues when connection with the 3G network, is handed over to slower networks, such as AT&T’s Edge, where 3G isn’t available. Many claim that a German chipset used in the 3G iPhone, manufactured by Infineon Technologies, is partially to blame. If this is the case, critics question whether or not a software update will do the trick in improving reception.
On the contrary, Michael Gartenderg, VP for mobile strategy at Jupitermedia, says the whole issue may be blown out of proportion. “We’ve seen these isolated reports about people having connectivity issues with 3G and Edge, and frankly I have those issues on a variety of phones. Cell phone coverage is tricky.”
As if the issues running rampant with the iPhone were not enough, Apple is admitting that MobileMe’s launch was not their finest hour. (Their words, not mine.) Following Apple’s 60-day extension on Monday to MobileMe subscriber’s free service…We believe 3 months from now this will be an issue of the past.
Naturally we all know that cell phone coverage is no guarantee. My personal experience has shown that while 3G coverage exists in the metropolitan area where I work, my reception always seems to fail. To be fair, this did not happen when I was a devoted Verizon customer. The pain and frustration I have felt with my iPhone in recent weeks is palpable, as I do not yet see it to be a reliable form of verbal communication. No worries though, I will not give up. I still maintain faith that Apple will clear all issues with reception (and other minor glitches) in the coming months.
