As many are aware, Apple has not significantly updated their Cinema Displays since June of 2004, minus a few price drops and spec improvements along the way.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple may be planning a Cinema Display refresh for the Macworld San Francisco conference held on January 5th-9th at Moscone West in San Francisco. I really hope this is true… Aviv has written about how the Macbook Pro cases and Cinema Displays have been neglected like a red-headed step child, so if Apple cares at all about its customers, these products are in dire need of an update overhaul. MacRumors explains that the new displays will integrate LED backlights in efforts to be more environmentally conscious by eliminating fluorescent-backlit displays all together.
Steve Jobs has previously released an official statement directed at the need for “A Greener Apple,” so new LED displays would make sense.
Pricing is still an uncertainty as LED displays tend to not be very cost effective, take for example the Samsung 30″ LED display that rings up at $4735. The price gaps between Apple’s displays and their competitor’s products are widening everyday, so it’ll be interesting to see what Apple releases (if rumors hold true) at the upcoming MacWorld conference. One thing we do know for sure is that we are in dire need of an update. We here at MacBlogz have been adamant about a refresh for quite some time now, as they have been long overdue for a refresh. So hopefully we can put this on our holiday wish list.
