For those of you who wish to take a swim with your new iPhone 3G, Northeast Maritime Institute, out of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, has developed the Golden Shellback to accommodate most smart phone devices.
The Golden Shellback coating is said to be a “unique coating that protects critical operational equipment against damage and loss of function caused by exposure to weather and moisture. It is ideal for applications in the electronic industry.”
The site goes on to boast the coatings excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable, with repairs made using abrasive methods.
Even though the site touts that the Golden Shellback repels water, one of the inventors recently went on The Today Show for an demonstration where he fully submerges the iPhone (along with other devices) in a water bath.
Although the product is currently unavailable to the public, the company’s website currently contains a video product demonstration and a downloadable product description. Feel free to check out the site, and if anyone gets their hands on the Golden Shellback, let us know what you think!
