Official Report: Russia to Start Selling iPhone in 2009

A report from Bloomberg.com today states that Russia will be selling the iPhone in 2009. Although most details still remain fuzzy, a few have been officially confirmed.

Apple’s global presence has been vastly increased since the launch of the original iPhone. Countries and carriers have been clamoring for the device for over a year, with only a select number of countries currently selling the device. Our iPhone World Map details what’s going on with Apple’s plan for global domination.

In an exclusive (video link) interview with CNBC’s Jim Goldman, Steve Jobs mentions that China as well as Russia are “the two big ones we [Apple] couldn’t close, but I think you’ll see those later this year.”

“Apple Inc.’s iPhones will go on sale in Russia next year, Vedomosti reported, citing Evgeny Butman, a Moscow-based director of Apple IMC, Apple’s official vendor in the country,” reports Bloomberg.com’s Paul Abelsky.

Abelsky goes on to explain that customers will have to sign up for contracts with phone carriers in Russia, at the time of purchase. “No single carrier will have exclusive rights to iPhone’s service contracts, according to Vedomossti.”

“Apple declined to comment to Vedomosti. About 470,000 iPhones are already operable in Russia after the handsets were hacked to work on unauthorized networks, the newspaper said, citing Moscow-based Mobile Research Group.”

Global Domination, revenue, true sales numbers, and actual impact will only be realized when the iPhone is “Selling” in all of the countries we have listed on our iPhone Carrier World Map. Not speculative, not slated for release… But actually “being sold” in those countries.
