iPhone OS 2.1 Reveals New iPod Touch Model?

Apple’s iPod touch could be nearing the end of its current cycle. With all of the new and improved hardware in the iPhone 3G, the current model iPod touch is falling further behind its cousins.

MacBlogz has reported about the possibilities that the next iPod touch will follow in the iPhone’s footsteps.

Christina reported the following:The way I see it, Apple has two choices. They either give the iPod a boost to include all the bells and whistles on the iPhone, (The price for similar sized iPod and iPhones could stand on the same platform as the iPod consumer would be avoiding the monthly carrier charge, able to keep their current phone but still have access to the Internet, GPS, iTunes, weather, iPod Applications, and calendar). Or, Apple could keep the iPod touch basic, recognize that as the industry moves towards more powerful handheld devices with more available features there is still a valuable market for the iPod touch (children, elderly, those who want it all) and as long as the two products are under the same roof, it is a win-win situation.

iPhone Atlas is reporting that “Alongside a few interesting tidbits that could indicate the addition of turn-by-turn directions in Google Maps, the beta release of iPhone OS 2.1 includes a potential reference to a forthcoming iPod touch model.”

“Analysis of the iPhone OS 2.1 file structure reveals various files that display the string “iPod2,1.” The current iPod touch is referenced with the model moniker “1,1,” The first-generation iPhone carries the model moniker “1,1,” while the iPhone 3G uses the moniker “1,2,” iPhone Atlas continues.

A new update could definitely secure a few swirling rumors that we’ve heard in the past.
