[update] Apple’s Secret Product is a MacBook Touch?

During yesterday’s Q3 Financial Results Conference Call which you can still listen to here, Apple execs kept referring to a “Secret Product Transition that they could not talk about.” Amidst massive speculation about new laptops and other possibly exciting releases from Apple, a possible Macbook Touch rumor is now making its rounds around the rumor mill.

Macbook Touch

MacDailyNews reports that their source (the same one that tipped them off to a wireless iTunes Store sales direct to iPod, iPhone a week before Apple debuted it) is now giving them some insightful information about a possible upcoming Macbook Touch to be released by Apple.

Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.

MDN follows the claim with a disclaimer that “This is a rumor. We have no other information. We cannot confirm this information independently at this time, but felt it plausible enough to bring to your attention.”

While this rumor definitely seems like it would make sense (kinda), a Macbook Touch that has access to the new App Store, has multi-touch capabilities, a slot-loading disc drive, full Mac OS X, GPS and more seems like a necessary step for Apple. In order for them to further their massive offerings (like iTunes and the App Store) more devices that have access to these services need to start showing up in Apple Stores.

After all, the App Store can’t live on mobile devices forever… that would just be a shame.

The credibility of this source was ruined with this lone assertion: “This is why they bought P.A. Semi.”

There is no way that Apple can go from purchase of PA Semi to a shipping product that depends on PA technology in just a few months. The purchase of PA Semi won’t bear fruit for at least a couple of years.

Since the source made this assertion so deliberately, when in fact it could not be correct, it would seem that the source is just inventing a story (and doing a poor job of it too). The whole story is tainted now. Oh, sure, a Macbook Touch may very well be in the offing, and soon. But this source doesn’t have any real information to offer.

Your assertion of the PA Semi acquisition is fairly correct. I agree with you on most of it. But why couldn’t Apple release this with an altered or “custom” intel processor/chip.

They don’t 100% NEED PA Semi to release a tablet. Although, I can’t wait to see why they bought the company.

Regardless, I got to have one… or ten! As a teacher, graphic artist and photographer, this is my MAC. Pressure sensitive pen would be a nice addition. Hand writing recognition already exists, as does pen support. I say ship that BABY!!!
cheers,
Rick
