The exclusive U.S. iPhone service provider giveth and then taketh away. Fast.

Just moments after AT&T had posted a message on its website claiming to provide free Wi-Fi services to iPhone, the company retracted it. Spokespeople for AT&T are now keeping a tight lip about the cause of the error, or whether free Wi-Fi will ever even be a possibility.
The statement posted at approximately 9:00 a.m. PDT read, “AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi hotspot network with more than 17,000 hotspots.”
“It was posted in error and was removed shortly thereafter, so it should not have been up,” said Seth Bloom, an AT&T spokesperson, in a phone interview. “We know how important Wi-Fi is and we intend to make it available to as many people as we can, but nothing can be announced today.” via Wired.
This is not the first time that AT&T has been a tease either. In late April, iPhone users unexpectedly received free Wi-Fi sans any official announcement from the company. But, within a few days all of that free access mysteriously disappeared.
Friday’s mix-up may have proved to be an even more embarrassing mishap than before, seeing as though an official announcement had been visible to all in writing. It is certainly not helping that no further comments have been issued by AT&T surrounding the issue.
