Users experiencing lagging iPhone interfaces

If you have been experiencing an unusual amount of lag with your iPhone 3G or first-gen with OS 2.0, don’t worry, you are not alone.

Numerous users have apparently been experiencing unusually sluggish performance with their iPhone 3G interface, particularly in regards to scrolling, typing, and returning to the home screen. These issues appear to pertain to iPhone OS 2.0, as users with first generation iPhones who have made the upgrade are experiencing similar problems.

One user’s report from an Apple discussion thread states:

I have the first gen with 2.0 on it and the lag is very annoying also. Mainly on the contacts screen, but also with typing. When the contacts display I click on a name, sometimes two or three times before it comes up because of the lag and sometimes one of the clicks happens to be on the phone number after the contact comes up.

Another place I see bad lag on 1.14 and 2.0 firmware that has always bugged me was when you are in Safari, then click on the address bar and want to type in a new url, when you click the X to delete the current entry it takes something like 5 seconds before it goes blank and you can start typing the url.

Here are a few video examples of the problems that people are encountering:

Often lag can be eliminated by resetting your iPhone. To do this, simply turn off your device, by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button (on the top right) for a few seconds, then slide the red slider. You can then turn your phone back on by holding the Sleep/Wake button until the apple logo appears. You may, however find that lag or slow response can return even after resetting.

I can’t personally say that I have encountered any of these issues, but if you are experiencing similar problems, please share the details with us.

I have a 3G and I’m experiencing severe lag with the address book. In some cases it takes up to 10 seconds before I can search etc.

Alison… You should upgrade to Software Version 2.1.
