Many of you have seen a the YouTube video that has made it’s rounds in recent days showing an unlocked iPhone 3G in use in Brazil. While it has been dubbed a fake by some and others accuse the video creators of using an already unlocked iPhone from one of the countries who’s laws prohibit the devices in a locked state, it appears now that the Brazilian team, DesbloqueioBr, may really be onto something here.
Similar to the Turbo SIM unlock for the first iPhone, this system utilizes an ultra thin card that piggybacks on your SIM. Amazingly, this system does not require additional tools installed on your iPhone, which would require jailbreaking.
“Paulo and Breno of DesbloqueioBr explained that the magic lies in the programming of the SIM adapter itself, by tricking the iPhone into believing a test SIM has been inserted, the iPhone allows service and then functionality is handed back to your SIM. We tested the unlock in our own FIDO locked handset with a local TIM SIM card, then in their AT&T set, and it worked perfectly in both.” via Engadget.
While pricing has yet to be revealed, further information should come out shortly. In the mean time, you can check out the video of it in action by clicking on the image below.
