Get Ready for Mobile Me; Migration begins in less than an hour

MobileMe Launch – 7/9/2008, 6pm-12am PT

In approximately 30 minutes all .Mac (dot-mac) services are expected to go offline while Apple migrates users over to their new Mobile Me suite of applications.

mobile me

As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be taken offline at 6pm PT on Wednesday, July 9th.

Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch.

MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window.

Here are some tips to help your migration go smoothly.

Backing up Address Book

1. Launch Address Book
2. Select File > Export > Address Book Archive
3. Find a location to save the Address Book archive, then click the Save button.

Backing up iCal

1. Launch iCal
2. Select File > Backup iCal
3. Find a location to save the iCal backup, then click the Save button.

Backing up iPhone / iPod touch

1. Just sync it to iTunes

Additional Information:

• Also, any Web pages published to your .Mac account will be available via their current mac.com URL as well as the new me.com. For example, if I have an iWeb or other site published at http://web.mac.com/MyMacRocks, it will also be available at http://web.me.com/MyMacRocks. The same holds true for Web Gallery sites. The .Mac slides publisher, however will go away when Apple activates MobileMe.

• Back up all of your iDisk files (see my new tutorial on Backing Up Your iDisk).

• If you’ve been using homepage.mac.com for hosting your websites, do some research on other web hosting services just in case you need or want to make a switch after MobileMe replaces .Mac.

• Clear out some of your .Mac mailboxes. Now might be the perfect time to delete those email messages from years ago that you no longer need. This will make it much easier to switch to another email provider if you decide that MobileMe isn’t serving your needs and you want to find a cheaper alternative.

• If your iDisk files and email are backed up and you’ve found some alternatives to MobileMe/.Mac, the transition process shouldn’t be too painful.
