It was recently reported on SegwayChat forums that Doug Field, Segway’s Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Design and Engineering (since day 1) will be leaving the company to accept the coveted position as Apple’s Vice President of Product Design.
During his time at Segway, Field and his team were entirely responsible for the development of the Segway Personal Transporter, as well as all the research and development of future Segway Products. Interestingly enough, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was highly critical of the Segway’s early design, which was created largely by Field and his colleague Scott Waters.
One thought about the Segway: I have noticed that in certain cities (MacBlogz’ home of Portland, Oregon included) the futuristic Segway has been used by public police officers. While I find the Segway to be an ‘interesting’ alternative to everyday forms of transportation (i.e. walking or rolling around), it seems that I can’t rid my mind with the vision of one of the many street hooligans running up, pushing said police officer off his Segway, snatching some old lady’s purse and electrically speeding away before anyone is the wiser.
Either way, lets hope that Mr. Field enjoys a lovely welcome into the Apple family.
Additional thoughts: It’s known that Steve Jobs is a highly pursuasive individual. His “Reality Distortion Field” is HUGE and insanely hard to get out of. It’s also known that Steve treats the “talent” in his life like Gods. Steve obviously saw something special in Doug Field and decided to poach him from Segway. Maybe it’s something that Woz said to Steve? Steve Wozniak is known to be a devoted Segway user. Maybe Woz convinced Steve that Segway’s are the wave of the future.

If you really envision the street hooligan scenario, you have obviously not ridden a Segway…. and likely, the hooligan has not either!
