Three petitioning for iPhone 3G.

“Telecommunications provider Three is launching a petition to secure the use of the new Apple iPhone on it’s network. While Optus and Vodafone will carry the phone, Telstra and Three have been left in the dark. Three will today launch a petition for it’s customers to buy the new iPhone, Fairfax Media reports.”

“We’ve engaged Apple to get the 3G iPhone but at this stage we haven’t been able to arrange it, so I don’t know if we’re going to be able to arrange it,” Three’s Noel Hamill said.

“Both Optus and Vodafone are to host the iPhone on prepaid and contract plans.  Both Telstra and Three have been suspiciously quiet over the phone. At one time, they were believed to be negotiating with Apple.  Three said it was a logical choice for the iPhone because of it’s generation data packages.”

“We first launched 3G into the Australian market, our customers are very 3G centric so they’re high users of data, they’re high users of 3G services and we think it’ll be a great opportunity for the 3G iPhone,” Mr Hamill said.”

“Data use will be a major concern for users, with the iPhone geared heavily toward video, audio and media consumption. Optus and Vodafone are yet to announce pricing details for the iPhone.”

Additional Thoughts:  While I can understand Three’s ambition and interest in carrying the iPhone, as any mobile provider would be sure to benefit from such a transaction, two other major carriers are already providing it.  A third provider would quite obviously make availability and usage easier, yet Three is certainly  not the only carrier to be left in the dark.   All of us here Stateside are limited to AT&T, making it difficult for some folks to have access to the device at all.  Either way, I’d say good luck.
