Those of you that thought you were sneaky by dunking your iPhone in the toilet to scam out a new one before your warranty is up may soon no longer be able to claim, “uhhh, it just stopped working.”
Uk site, Register Hardware, is reporting that Apple may be working on a way to prove when a device has been subjected to water damage. “According to an Apple patent application entitled “Water Detection Arrangement”, boffins at the company have explored ways of placing pads inside the phone which would change colour when exposed to water.”
The patent application explores numerous ways that such pads could be placed within the structure of the device. So when a warranty claim is made, an Apple employee can simply open the device, and determine whether the unit has been exposed to water.

“The manufacturer does admit that the design has several drawbacks, including difficulties in securely storing pads inside each gadget without enabling crafty customers to tamper with them.”
If Apple does find a suitable way to use the pads, which I’m sure many of you have seen before on different mobile devices, iPhone users will have to either be more careful around water or just get a bit more crafty.
