Apple engineers paid significantly less than their Silicon Valley peers.

Recently launched Glassdoor.com, utilizes the simple idea of, you tell me your salary and I’ll tell you mine. “The site collects company reviews and real salaries from employees of large companies and displays them anonymously for all members to see…The idea is to collect as much detailed salary information and feedback for every job title at a company so that job seekers can know how to evaluate an offer, and current employees can see how they are doing relative to their peers.” via TechCrunch.

The salaries of Apple engineers seem comparatively modest compared other Silicon Valley companies such as, Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft. Based upon the submissions, the survey statistics show that engineers for Apple make around $89,000 per year, whereas similar jobs at Yahoo and Microsoft pull in around $105,000. Even greater are the salaries at Google, where engineers stand to make as much as $112,573 per year.

Based on Apple’s 10-K filings, the reports may reflect salaries from a few years past, before the release of Apple’s iPod line. “In 2003, had the company had paid its engineers the same amount received by Google workers today, Apple could have entered into a net loss. By comparison, Apple might have saved only 6 percent through lower salaries in 2007. These figures do not account for material R&D expenses, however, or possible tax write-offs.” via MacNN.

Thoughts: What is not taken into account in any of these reports is the quality of work and work environment. While Apple engineers may be getting a bit stiffed on income, it may be far more rewarding to produce the quality of goods and services that Apple is known for. Often work conditions can overshadow any dollar amount of compensation.

Apple’s engineers definitely stick with Apple because Steve Jobs has convinced them that they are changing the world. They obviously have a deep respect and admiration for the company, even though they may walk the halls in fear.

A deep connection to the work is why these over-worked, under-payed engineers stick with Apple.
