Ok, I think you're partially right. I think you're missing the integration of touchscreen integration into those displays. Imagine a light, wireless, touchscreen 17" display that embeds some of the functionality of the ipod touch, has a camera on the front and the back, so you can show what you're looking at, as well as what you look like. It doesn't have a CPU or storage or much else on it so the main battery drain is the leds for the display, so it lasts for 5-8 hours and uses "standard" ibook batteries. Add to this a pressure sensitive pen and you have a cintiq/wacom killer (they've been overpriced for so long it's a wonder no one has come along and toppled them). So, now you have a system in the home or office, where, if you have your computer on the wireless (probably will require 802.11N) you'll be able to get XGA or SXGA (maybe WXGA) displays in a given area.
On the other hand, they might just be making monitors with the camera embedded into the display http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn9059
