iPhone App Store launching June 27th?

app store

Numerous sites are reporting that during Steve Jobs’ keynote this past Monday at Apple’s WWDC 2008, he lacked to mention the App Store launch date. You will hear Steve Jobs say iPhone 2.0, SDK, and Enterprise stuff will be available in “early July”—but not the App Store.

The image you see above was on the Apple Australia webpage (iPod Touch page specifically) briefly. The date listed in the image says June 27. Further, according to Jacqui Cheng and Clint Ecker on the “floor” at WWDC, “multiple devs have told us that they were instructed (by Apple) to have apps ready by June 16.”

We certainly can’t wait to get our grubby little paws on iPhone 3G, and download as many free apps as possible from the App Store. But this rumor kind of makes us wonder why Apple would launch the App Store with iPhone 2.0’s OS and then launch the iPhone 3G about 2 weeks later.

If I understand this correctly: iPhone 3G will not be released by June 27th, and we are going to get the App Store on our current iPhone models? What about all the location based apps that rely on GPS? Do we have to pay for apps and then pay for them again? This doesn’t seem very Apple like to us.
