iPhone games will sell for $25 each.

Could it be true? Is Apple planning on selling games for the iPhone at no less than $25? If so, Apple’s intentions are obviously to compete directly with devices like the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP.

Apple has released the iPhone SDK so that third-party developers can contribute (via software) to the amazing device. It has been revealed that Ignacio Cavero, CEO of development studio LemonQuest, told PocketGamer that Apple’s “games would be sold in iTunes for €17-18″ (which is about $25, or £14). If this is true, it means that Apple is choosing to compete with other hand-held gaming devices, such as the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP and their game libraries.

$25 is more than double the asking price for games that are being sold currently on the iPod.

Whether or not the iPhone games in question can hold their own against full-fledged, devoted hand-held gaming consoles, is yet to be determined. Companies like EA and Sega have confirmed they’re releasing adaptations of Spore and Super Monkey Ball on the platform.

Forbes yesterday published an interesting story about “Why Apple Could Kill the Nintendo DS.” The $25 price-point for iPhone games (if true) could be amazing for Apple, or it could throw a serious wrench in the adaptation of the iPhone as a hand-held gaming device. Because Apple will moderate the application store (and iTunes) from which users can buy applications and games for the iPhone, only they know the true pricing to come.
