Google to unveil Gmail themes June 5th ?

Google’s Gmail has been in beta development for years now. The user-base has to be in the “millions” which spans larger than any normally released beta piece of software. A beta usually means that a limited number of people or certain select number of users can use the program.

As it stands, WebMonkey is reporting that Gmail is set to unveil skinnable “themes” for Gmail on June 5th. Which means that users may be given the opportunity to style their own Gmail inbox’s and interface elements. We take this rumor with a grain of salt. Every major service that allows full customization of the interface ends up being clunky and horrifyingly disastrous to maintain, prime example: MySpace.

The unveiling of these new features on June 5th may be a Gmail version of Google Labs allowing users to test “cutting-edge” features inside Gmail before they are released under the bigger “beta” tag. So, a beta of new features will be unveiled to the beta testers of the overall beta that is Gmail. WOW. It doesn’t get much more “beta-loving-web-2.0′ish-silicon valley-loving the beta tag” than that.

Gmail may be in….”BETA!”, but it is BY FAR AND AWAY the best email service available. If anyone has ever seen the amount of invasive ads that reside inside Yahoo Mail’s inbox, they would understand that Gmail is years ahead of anything else around. The ads are far more targeted and relevant, less invasive, the general feel and user experience is premium, fast, snappy and responsive. The little “beta” tag by the Gmail logo doesn’t bother me, as long as it continues to work the way it does, and be as reliable as it has been, I’ll remain a devoted user.
