Since the launch of the Times Reader in April of 2006, Windows users have enjoyed full access to the popular publication. While originally built for tablet PC’s, the software syncs to the Time’s servers delivering paginated versions of the paper that can be easily viewed, even offline. Over the past two years, Mac users have not had the luxury to utilize the Times Reader, that is, until now.
Rob Larson, Vice President of Digital Production for the Times, reports that a beta version of the software will be available for Mac later this month. He notes that “…we’ve focused on providing the core set of features that have made the PC version popular. These include the easy-to-read paginated format, the ability to view the paper offline, a seven-day archive, text search, the ability to adjust the font size and access to Premium Crosswords.”
The platform is built on a Cocoa application that uses Safari and the Silverlight plugin to render the pages. While the beta version will be offered for free, once stable it will cost $14.95 per month (1/4 of the price of a print subscription).
