What we want in iPhone 2.0

With all this buzz about the next generation iPhone, we’d like to take a moment and share some features we would like to see in iPhone 2.0. We know some of these may be limited due to technical capacities – (battery life, evil corporate carriers…) but they sure would be might nice:

Picture / Multimedia Sharing
It would definitely be suitable to use Flickr for pictures and You Tube for instant video sharing. Of course a video camera would be needed in the phone and a native uploading app as well. But with the release of the SDK, this should be no sweat
GPS – The real stuff
I’ve been using the Gamrin Nuvi 200w for the last couple of weeks here in Portland,OR., and it only cements the fact that Apple needs to get involved with some Interface input. Currently the iPhone is capable of producing some rather inconsistent mapping functions through wireless network triangulation. This isn’t anywhere near as powerful as a satellite GPS system like the Garmin.
Video Recording
It’s already been proven through third-parties that the iPhone is capable of recording video. It’s just a matter of time before Apple decides to incorporate it into the iPhone.
Skype
This is less than likely seeing as how it would divert people from using ATT’s plans. But if the iPhone ever breaks loose from the death chains of mobile carriers, we might see some no-holds barred Skype integration !

There is much more that we would like to see brought to the iPhone. Some of it will probably be rolled out by third-parties developing applications with the iPhone SDK. The SDK has opened the doors to many possibilities for software, gaming and third-party applications. Yet there still remain some core features missing, that involve actual hardware and Apple’s genuine development backing.

What would you guys like to see in iPhone 2.0 ?

Sound off below…

A universal landscape keyboard. It is way overdue.

A universal landscape keyboard ? What exactly do you mean by that ? What applications would you want it for ?

You know how the keyboard expands horizontally in Safari when you turn an iPhone on its side?

It needs to do that in every application. SMS, email, notes. One should be able to twist the iPhone and use the expanded, more comfortable keyboard anywhere that involves typing.

If that landscape keyboard could be used universally, it would make typing on the iPhone so much better.

Well, longer battery life would be the best for all involved, but… As for functionality, how about a place to download and store files. For instance, if I get a PDF via email, I’d like to be able to store it in a folder outside of mail for later access. Guess that would require a mobile version of Preview or Adobe Reader. How about a mobile version of Pages to generate and edit docs. How about the ability to print via a cable or blue tooth connection to a printer.

Oh man Rob… You are reading my wish list for iPhone apps ? I think a lot of what we want can be done with the iPhone SDK once it’s released and some creative developers get their hands on it.

What do you think ? You think we’ll have hardware limitations ?

I’m sure like most of you, Ive been living with the iPhone since the day it launched. I run into situations daily where this would be a massive time-saver. This feature is not a just feature. It is a necessity! I couldn’t agree more.

I feel the line between laptop and mobile phone is becoming more and more gray. With the creaton of the iphone and the application capability, where do you even draw the line? Let’s be honest, what we really want is a handheld laptop that fits in your pocket. If this is the ultimate goal, then skype will become an increasingly hot topic. A buy-out of skype from a major carrier could be in the horizon, don’t you think?

Andrew, if Skye were bought out by a major carrier, would they charge you for wi-fi internet usage? Would they charge you for video conferencing over their networks? What would happen if we were using Skype on our iPhones inside our home on our private wi-fi connections, would be charged by the carrier too? Cause if so, this would be rather expensive. I agree fully that having Skype on the iPhone would be amazing. But, how would you want the pricing and logistics to work?

It’s certainly not black and white. The attractiveness of Skype comes from the fact that its free. If they begin to charge you to use it on a mobile phone what is the advantage of using skype to place your calls in the first place? As I mentioned before, what we ultimately would like is a pocket sized laptop. Currently, with a wireless card and subscription, you could simply take your laptop out and call whomever you want through skype to another skype user. If this were available on an iphone, people would simply buy the cheapest carrier plan with unlimited wireless activity. I think this fact will eliminate the possibility of skype being available on your phone.

Andrew, that’s what I was saying myself. If Skype were available on the iPhone than it would mean that it was being used through a wi-fi connection. How would this translate for Apple too ? They get a monthly cut from the carrier rates as well.

I think that a true GPS would amazing. I also have a Garmin and it seems to always be real spotty. The interface definitely needs some work and if Apple got their hands on it, it would really take it to the next level.

ATT and Verizon’s mobile TV services are getting some decent buzz. A person could then have in one device a phone, iPod (music, podcasts, vidcasts, shows, movies), full internet experience, full e-mail (and someday chat?), and a TV set.

I doubt we’ll see it though. I can’t imagine Steve letting them stick an antenna onto an iPhone, nor particularly enthusiastically incorporate technology that lets users watch video content with no inducement to spend money at the iTunes Store.

More requests: a 3MP camera, flash (photo flash, not “Flash”), video recording, CC quality sound recording like iPod Classics, blue tooth stereo profiles, “universal landscape keyboard,” more memory, wireless sync — and being able to recharge itself by shaking it vigorously in your hand (that last one’s a joke, if you couldn’t tell)

I think mobile tv would be an amazing addition to the beloved iPhone. However, like you said, The Steve probably won’t be letting anything encroach on his iTunes sales anytime soon.

Am I the only one who wants to listen to Howard Stern on my iPhone? We have Satellite Radio over here and Howard is a staple. If only we had this in our Apple devices. Somewhere in my gut, something is telling me that this would be a very welcome addition to iPod’s and the iPhone.

How about some mobile FullTilt Poker on the iphone. FullTilt and Poker Stars make enough to throw at&t or verizon a kick back. It would increase traffic and the poker companies would make more. This could possibly be my gambling addiction talking.

HAHAHAH !!! Andrew !!! you know how amazing a mobile PStars client would be ? It wouldn’t have to be a full blown mobile version of the game. Ultimate Bet has these mini-views that they allow you to view on your desktop (basically a mini table). I think PStars could whip something like this up for the iPhone 100%. We’ve been talking about this as well. It would be amazing !!! Good Call !

I’m glad you agree. I would imagine that FullTilt would be the first to jump on board given its the only site that is Apple friendly. All others are PC exclusive.
