We originally posted about the speculation that HBO shows might begin to start selling on iTunes.
However now it’s official !
If you open up iTunes you’ll see that all-time favorites like The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome and Sex and The City. This is yet again a marriage made in heaven for the iTunes video library. HBO has a lineup of extremely heavy hitters and these newly added shows are guaranteed revenue generators, not by delivering direct cash (we all know iTunes is NOT a cash cow for Apple), but by increasing the demand and interest in Macintosh, iPod and iPhone sales.
The only downfall us consumers will face is the inevitable price increase for these premium shows. As it stands right now, some of HBO’s catalog is selling for $2.99 per episode on iTunes.
Apple’s vice president of iTunes, Eddy Cue said that the increase in prices for some of HBO’s shows - “Deadwood,” “Rome” and “The Sopranos” - are still less expensive than buying the DVD sets of the full seasons of those shows. Right now you can walk into Best Buy, or go here and get all of the sixth season for over 100$, which translates into higher prices than what is currently being sold on iTunes.
Either way, this is another bold move in the Digital Media Revolution, which is being led by Apple. HBO is a premium content service provider and having them join the iTunes family is a necessary addition.
One Comment to “HBO Officially on iTunes.”
I personally don’t mind the price increase because, as stated earlier, HBO is premium viewing and is not available to the public for free.
I wonder what NBC is going to think of this??? Does anyone know if there is any talk of bringing the network back to iTunes? Am I the only one that misses it???
