Unless you’ve been living at the bottom of the ocean for the last 4 years, you’ve heard of a little internet company called Google™. Well, how would you feel if this friendly little internet GIANT was moving into your town and developing massively complex buildings, data centers and cooling plants? Would you welcome The Goog with open arms? Or would you plant your foot in the ground and say “nay”? Either way, once a company like this makes up it’s mind, you can bet they’ll get the job done. Most people, companies and probably countries by now, would shutter at the thought of loosing Google as an ally. Oregon has become a new breeding ground for technology and the use of what that technology produces, it’s no surprise that Google wanted to establish a dominant presence here, and now Microsoft is inching in too.
Microsoft and Yahoo both have announced plans to build big data centers in Wenatchee, Wash., 130 miles north of The Dalles, Oregon., where Google is installing it’s next “plex”. This as some analysts have said, will create a “multibillion-dollar-face-off” among Google, Microsoft and Yahoo that could predict the future of internet dominance.
Aviv’s Thoughts: In recent news Microsoft has made an offer to acquire Yahoo for a premium price at exactly $44.6 billion. Steve Ballmer led this attempt at acquiring the fledgling search engine because he felt it might help Microsoft in their quest against Google, (among other reasons….MSN ?). Once intense discussion began, it was only a matter of time before Jerry Yang was somehow offended by Steve Ballmer, and somehow the deal managed to fall apart. While all of this is happening, Google is sifting through it’s rolodex, calling up Jerry Yang and telling him not to worry. So, as far as Microsoft having anything to compete with, at this point, it’s only themselves and the salesman by degree who has somehow managed to become CEO.
“Local residents are at once enthusiastic and puzzled about their affluent but secretive new neighbor, a successor to the aluminum manufacturers that once came seeking the cheap power that flows from the dams holding back the powerful Columbia. The project has created hundreds of construction jobs, caused local real estate prices to jump 40 percent and is expected to create 60 to 200 permanent jobs in a town of 12,000 people when the center opens later this year.” quotes the New York Times.
“We’re trying to organize our chamber ambassadors to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and they’re trying to keep us all away,” said Susan Huntington, executive director of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce. “Our two cultures aren’t matching very well.”
I personally both admire and respect Google very much for it’s continued effort to remain balanced. Their company motto “Don’t Be Evil” can be followed by all, not just The Goog. By Google creating these jobs in locations such as The Dalles, OR., they are also creating and paving the way for perhaps the next small internet startup just like them. They are creating possibilities for people who may not have otherwise had them. Benefits for people who may not have otherwise had them. Somehow through the complex maze of politics and obstruction, Google remains balanced and well-defined.

Regardless of anything, for Google to move into any town, however big or small, means BIG money. Small business will flourish and newer and larger chains will move in….meaning more jobs overall(not just the future google employee hopefuls.)
I can’t wait to see how The Dalles, a glorified truck stop (sorry to all locales), will take advantage of this amazing new direction the development of this small town will inevitalby go in.

Christina, to be honest. I don’t think The Dalles really has any idea what’s about to hit them.
This means the possibility for The Dalles to become a regular and known stop on the technology map.
I personally think that the scope of this move is being overlooked.

“…would shutter at the thought …”
Really? Closing up their businesses altogether if Google is not counted as an ally is a bit over the top, don’t you think?
Perhaps they would merely ’shudder’ at the thought?

Hahaha, you are right Pete. Closing up their businesses to avoid The Goog would be insane. It would def be more like “shudder, or tremble”.
